This magnificent fortress, which is idyllically located on the river estuary, is still largely intact. Its endless passages, tunnels, and stairways make for great exploration, and there are also fantastic exhibitions that depict its mediaeval history.
This historic home served as the birthplace of Henry Tudor, the father of the notorious Henry VIII, and the grandfather of Elizabeth I. It was also the literal seat of a number of important barons who had major influences on the history of Britain.
You can picnic in the beautifully maintained grounds or from St. Anne’s Bastion, take in views of the estuary while enjoying refreshments at the snack bar, and visit the Brass Rubbing Centre to make a souvenir. After your visit, take a stroll around the millpond and mediaeval town walls to see the castle in all its splendour.
Keep an eye on the website for news about upcoming events. They often have reenactments of battles, falconry shows, dragon days, story telling, and a lot more.
